Maundy Thursday At-Home Worship Guide

While we cannot participate in Maundy Thursday together physically, we can still join together from our own homes to recognize Maundy Thursday. Use this worship guide as an outline to create your own Maundy Thursday services! On Thursday evening, partake in the service knowing that we are united in Christ, through the Holy Spirit.

Introduction to Maundy Thursday

As Christians, Holy Week holds great significance throughout our entire lives, as well as in our current circumstances. If you have never heard of Holy Week, or perhaps just need a refresher, watch this video for a quick introduction to Holy Week.

You will need to prepare a few things to participate in the Maundy Thursday service. Watch the video below for an introduction to Maundy Thursday and to begin thinking about how to prepare. Each portion of the service has a video attached to explain the significance of each portion.

Maundy Thursday Service Outline

Love Feast

As you sit down to the simple meal, read aloud Luke 22:7-13.

Then pray over the meal, either with your own prayer, or this prayer:

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,

as we take this meal, would you move in our hearts?

We ask that you would make real to us your sacrifice and your suffering.

We confess our sins and our shortcomings.

We come to the table knowing that your Son

made it possible for us to be in community with you.

Thank you for your immense love and unending grace.

Bless this food; as we eat, let this be something that draws us

into closer community with you and with your Church.

If you wish, you may read John 17 while you are eating. If you are alone, perhaps read it in your head. If you have a group of people, perhaps take turns reading, while the others listen and eat.

Foot Washing

While still at the table, read aloud John 13:2-16. Then clear the table from your meal's dishes if necessary, and get the supplies ready for the foot washing.

Once you are ready, read aloud John 13:34-35. Then wash each other's feet.

The Institution of the Lord's Supper

When you are done with the foot washing, bring out the bread and juice for the Lord's Supper. Once you have the elements on the table, read aloud Exodus 12:1-14 and Jeremiah 31:31-34. Then, while reading aloud Luke 22:19-22, take the bread and the juice; the bread after verse 19 and the juice after verse 20.

After taking the Lord's Supper, read aloud Psalm 22:16-18 and then Luke 22:39-46. Have the reader of the Luke passage also close the service by praying this prayer:

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,

as we leave,

let us take the place of the disciples,

trying to keep in mind the suffering of Jesus.
